The declassified CIA documents above refer to Operation Aerodynamic, a plan to support the Ukrainian resistance against Soviet occupiers during the 1940s and '50s.

During the recent crisis in Ukraine, both the protesters and deposed president of Ukraine have alluded to this major guerrilla war, showing support for opposite sides.

The ideological leader of the resistance, Stefan Bandera, was killed in 1959 by a KGB assassin using a specially-designed cyanide gun.
